The Eight Consciousnesses: Experiencing Life as It Is

6 Thursday evenings: May 18 – July 6, 7:00-8:30pm (no class June 22 or 29)

We are, as human beings, constantly interpreting our experience through the veils of reactivity, memory and labeling, eventually coming to experience life almost completely through a conceptual overlay, a conceptually driven reality.  The conceptual overlay can give us a reassuring sense of certainty – “I know this, I know that, this is good, that is bad, I know what is what” – but it also too often reduces our experience to mere labels, leaving us feeling unsatisfied, anxious and unhappy and feeling as if we are missing something important in life.  We rarely find ourselves feeling truly alive and present, full of the possibilities of life.

Buddhism provides us a brilliant map of the mind, called the Eight Consciousnesses, which clearly delineates this automatic process of reducing reality to concepts, to what we like or don’t like. Once understood,  the map provides a way to work towards a fuller, richer experience of life.

Join Stephen as he guides the class through the Eight Consciousnesses process with meditation, teaching, conversation and inquiry.

This class is available through live and recorded video and audio.

Location: Sukhasiddhi Center, Fairfax CA.

stephengrossStephen Gross met and took refuge with the previous Kalu Rinpoche in the mid-1980s. This seeded his interest in Vajrayana and eventually led him to study with Lama Palden and to complete both the Bodhi and Shangpa lineage practice programs. Fascinated with the human psyche, he attained his Master’s in Psychology and practiced as a licensed psychotherapist for 17 years. He has taught a course in “Buddhism and Psychology” at JFK University. Now, using his humor and love of the Dharma, Stephen teaches classes at Sukhasiddhi on both Buddhist philosophy and practice.
