Calling Upon Green Tara, Mother of All the Buddhas:
A Retreat for Removing Obstacles and Strengthening the Heart in Challenging Times
with Lama Palden & Lama Döndrup
In this time of heightened uncertainty and challenge, we gather as a sangha to call upon the swift and fearless activity of Green Tara, the Mother of all the Buddhas. Known for her boundless compassion and unwavering courage, Tara removes fear and anxiety, clears away outer and inner obstacles, and establishes the favorable conditions necessary for both worldly harmony and spiritual awakening.
Throughout the retreat, we will invoke Tara in her principal form and in select manifestations of her 21 emanations—each arising in response to specific difficulties, and each acting with swift compassion to liberate beings from suffering. We will give special focus to those forms of Tara whose enlightened activity addresses the kinds of obstacles we are collectively facing in today’s political and social climate.
Through teachings, intensive practice, and prayer, we will deepen our relationship with Tara and open more fully to her protective and liberating presence. Each day will include Green Tara practice, Riwo Sang Chöd, and Guru Rinpoche practice—clearing karmic and energetic hindrances that obscure our path. In the evenings, we will attune to the vast heart of compassion through Niguma’s Tonglen and practices invoking both Chenrezig and Chagdrukpa, peaceful and wrathful expressions of enlightened compassion.
This retreat is an invitation to strengthen our capacity to remain grounded, open- hearted, and spiritually resilient in the face of adversity. As we draw close to Tara, we come to trust the power of awakened feminine energy to guide us, support us, and act through us for the benefit of all beings. While we turn to Tara as a source of protection and inspiration, Vajrayana practice ultimately reveals that the true refuge lies in our own awakened nature—unfolding through the union of appearance-emptiness and awareness-emptiness.
The retreat container will offer silent meditation, embodied movement through lujong, daily teachings and practices, and the opportunity for individual guidance from the Lamas.
Please Note: Participants should have some familiarity with Buddhism and meditation.
Registration closes Friday, June 13 at 8 PM Pacific.

Meet the Retreat Leaders: Lama Döndrup & Lama Palden
Lama Döndrup Drolma, Resident Lama
Lama Döndrup has practiced and studied in the Buddhist tradition for over twenty years. In 2005, she completed the traditional three-year retreat and was authorized as a lama. In addition to her Buddhist practice, Lama Döndrup has trained in the Diamond Approach for seven years and has an MFA in piano performance. She is an active classical pianist and teacher in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Lama Palden Drolma, Senior Lama
Lama Palden Drolma is a master of Mahamudra transmission—the teachings and practices that enable one to reach complete awakening in this lifetime. She has been teaching since completing the traditional Tibetan Buddhist three-year retreat in the Shangpa and Karma Kagyu lineages in 1985, and becoming in 1986 one of the first Western women to be authorized as a lama in the Vajrayana (Tibetan Buddhist) tradition.
